The Scratch Scene connects women and non-binary musicians, fans, and organisers powering Glasgow’s DIY rock community.
We are Fennella and Stuart from Start From Scratch, a Glasgow-based glitter-core band who care deeply about heavy music, DIY culture, and making space where there often isn’t any.
Scratch Scene is our response to what we’ve seen and felt over years of being part of heavy music in Scotland. There is no shortage of incredible women and non-binary people making loud, inventive, powerful music. The problem is visibility, access, and connection. Too often those artists exist in pockets, or are spoken about as exceptions rather than being central to the scene itself.
We’re building Scratch Scene to change that, in a practical way rather than just a conceptual one.
At its core, Scratch Scene is a platform for showcasing, celebrating and connecting women and non-binary people in heavy music in Glasgow, across Scotland, and beyond. It exists through a quarterly zine, a quarterly live showcase called Grrrl’s Night, a website with blogs, reviews and useful writing, a WhatsApp community, and a growing directory of artists and resources.
Scratch Scene is still growing, but the intention is simple. More visibility, more connection, more room to exist loudly and fully in heavy music.
