Lucky 38 and Macabre Doll – Nice ‘N’ Sleazy
24th July 2026 – Nice ‘N’ Sleazy
Glasgow's very own Lucky 38 delivered a set that felt effortlessly smooth at Nice 'N' Sleazy on 24 July. Blending a little bit of grunge, a little bit of metal and a decent-sized dose of Southern rock, the five-piece ensemble crafted a sound that was as deep as it was sharp, drawing me in instantly.
Lucky 38 – Luis Gonzalez Araujo
The vocalist's slower, measured delivery was mirrored by her stage presence; she looked totally absorbed in the music and completely at ease. This was a singer, and a band as a whole, who felt established on stage and whose presence even seemed to demand a bigger one.
What truly stood out to me was that each instrument sat perfectly in the mix, allowing the songs to settle and flow naturally. I sometimes feel like the drums and bass can commandeer a set, but here they were cohesive and slotted in well. Each musician complemented the others perfectly.
Macabre Doll – Luis Gonzalez Araujo
The headline band, Macabre Doll, also hailing from Glasgow, delivered a relentless alternative metal set that maintained the momentum from the previous bands. The five-piece seemed to have brought along a loyal following, with a small pit starting early and even a few ambitious attempts at crowd surfing.
Returning for their first gig since April and introducing their new drummer, Callum, they played with impressive cohesion. They had easy rapport and treated the crowd warmly too. Whilst covers of Drowning Pool's 'Bodies' and Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin'' were enthusiastically received, there were sadly only a few original songs. Even so, their own releases, particularly the unnamed "Jump, Jump, Jump", received plenty of enthusiasm. However, with no music currently available online, I wonder if their own songs would have drawn an even stronger response if people new to the band had the chance to listen beforehand.
I'd love to see that change soon, as this is a young group with a ton of potential that deserves to be discovered.
